Il progetto indaga il delicato ecosistema di quella che fu la più grande cava d’amianto d'Europa, l'Amiantifera di Balangero, vicino a Torino. Oggi l’area è al centro di un esteso progetto di bonifica: i segni ancora leggibili dell’attività estrattiva convivono con le tracce di un progressivo inselvatichimento e con la ricomparsa, sia naturale che indotta, di diverse specie vegetali e animali. La montagna magica esplora questo territorio lunare su molteplici livelli: i licheni che lentamente colonizzano le rocce d’amianto, gli antichi riti e le memorie labili legate a questo minerale ignifugo, duttile e al contempo tossico. E i rimossi degli abitanti che oggi vivono a nei pressi della miniera, i cui sogni notturni riflettono collettivamente l'influenza sul territorio di questa montagna cava.
Cosa è sogno e cosa è realtà? Quanto in profondità sono sepolti i traumi delle comunità della valle? Quale eredità per il futuro ci lascia questa montagna sventrata della sua stessa anima?
Il lavoro è stato realizzato attraverso un'indagine antropologica sul territorio durata oltre due anni, i cui esiti sono confluiti in una video-installazione a quattro canali, una pubblicazione, due serie fotografiche e un film.

The project digs into the delicate ecosystem of the once-largest asbestos quarry in Europe, the Amiantifera of Balangero, near Turin. Today the area is the focus of an extensive reclamation process: the signs of the past mining activity coexist with traces of a progressive wilderness, with the reappearance, both natural and induced, of various plant and animal species. The magic mountain explores this lunar territory through many layers. The lichens that slowly colonize this contaminated land, the fading memories and ancient rites related to this fireproof, ductile  yet toxic mineral, the collective unconscious of the inhabitants of the villages surrounding the quarry, whose night dream reflect collectively the influence of this hollow mountain.
What is dream and what is real? How deep are the traumas of the valley communities buried? What legacy for the future does this mountain leave us, gutted of its very soul?
The work is realized through an anthropological inquiry on the territory that lasted over two years, the results of which are a four channel art installation, a publication, two photographic series, and a film.
